JoAnne Liebeler's Do It Herself: Everything You Need to Know to Fix, Maintain, and Improve Your Home

Image
This book is a powerhouse of a guide for any woman ready to roll up her sleeves and take charge of home maintenance. The author, with her no-nonsense yet engaging writing style, breaks down the often-intimidating world of home repair into accessible and empowering steps. The book is divided into practical sections, covering everything from plumbing and electrical work to drywall repairs and painting techniques. Each chapter is packed with step-by-step instructions, detailed illustrations, and helpful tips that demystify even the trickiest tasks. The author's approach not only educates but also encourages women to embrace their inner handyman, challenging the outdated notion that home repairs are a male domain. What sets this book apart is its combination of technical precision and conversational tone. The author writes as if she’s right there with you, cheering you on while providing the knowledge you need to tackle each project with confidence. The inclusion of personal anecd...

The Bookstore Sisters

Image
I just finished reading this book and I love it.  It's a heart warming and sweet short story.  I read the Kindle verson and I just  wish there were recipes for Isabel's mom's baked goods. This story is about how two estranged sisters got back together after many years of completely avoiding each other. It's about the willingness to open up to the second chance in life.  I overall find this short story very enjoyable. It's just satisfying for me to finally finish a book because I had given up or put away too many lengthy novels half-way through my reading. This book should be made into a Hallmark movie. The lines that I like from this book: "She had promise back then-all her teachers had told her so-but promise can disappear if you leave it to flounder." pg. 3 "He had planned to travel the day someday, that day had never come, and he'd gone exactly nowhere." "Suddenly, here she was in her thirties, with no family and no one to love, and s...

Magazine Review: Real Simple Organize Your Home

Image
I enjoyed the article "The Book Fairy" on page 17 of this one-time specialized magazine published in 2019. Just like the author, I also have a storage unit that stores my books and magazines. I had never retrieved one book or one magazine from my storage unit. I went to the storage unit to drop off my boxes of books and magazines and I never went there to retrieve a box to read or to giveaway. Recently, I have realized that paying high rent for the storage of books and magazines is just absurd, so I have been giving away numerous books to Goodwill.   It's nice to learn from reading this magazine that there are other places where I can give my books to. Like the author, I also had tried giving away my books and magazines on Twitter. But unlike the author, I never had anyone asking me for my giveaways. The author of this artcile have a hard time in parting with books. But for me, I have an even harder time to part with my huge collection of glossy magazines. All the books...

Stanley Plumbing

Image
Many homes and condos in America are old and therefore have lots of plumbing problems.  This book helps me understand how plumbing works and how to fix all the plumbing problems.  I was so stressed out and scared after my master bedroom's toilet didn't flush and the plumber told me he needed to dig a trench downstairs in the middle of my kitchen to replacce the sewer line.  The HOA has been dodging the plumber's proposal to dig, claiming it's my responsibility because the sewer line section that is broken is underneath my kitchen's slab foundation. But in my opinoin,  the HOA of a condo should be repsonsible for everything behind the wall and the ground. So I'm still debating with the HOA over this. But at least I see how even installing a new sewer line is not so much  a frightening thing that I thought it was, after I read this book.  Knowledge is power and the unknown is always scary. But now I am not scared anymore because I now understand what will be ...

The Complete Thyroid Health and Diet Guide: Understanding and Managing Thyroid Disease

Image
I'm reading this book right now because I had been feeling not well for many months and then one day, my body just crashed and I had to be hospitalized.  It took a long time before one of my doctors made the right diagnosis, which prompted me going to the hospital.  Upon admission, I had the vitals of a near-death person.  My thyroid numbers were so high that they went beyond the highest number in the range of meansurement.  All my electrolytes were way off.  I was always a slim and healthy person, and all my regular checkups were good.  So it took my doctors a while to find out what was wrong with me when I complained about slight discomfort in my guts. My persistent complaints about my guts sent me to do  MRIs, ultrasounds, and CT scans on my guts. All the imaging came out good and my doctors began to think my compalaints were due to stress and could be psychological.  They also suspected I just had a stomach flu that I just needed to wait...

Paleo for Beginners: The Guide to Getting Started

Image
This book has the recipe of one of my favorite breakfast food: "Orange-Cranberry Scones" on pg. 96. I'm just happy that this diet's 30-days meal plans allow me to have my favorite scone for breakfast.  As a dieting cookbook, I'm surprised to see that there is no nutritional analysis at the bottom of each recipe. To make space on my cluttered bookshelf, I'm now giving away a bunch of books and magazines that I had finished reading. They are like new in condition. Feel free to check them out before you go to Amazon to spend your money on them.

Breathe: The Well-being Special

Image
I love this magazine because it has a lot of beautiful artworks (like the one on the cover), great advice and also beautiful photos.  I enjoy reading the articles very much, but strangely none of the articles show the names and bio of the authors.  Before this magazine, I had never seen a magazine article that doesn't show the name of the author.  This book is very enjoyable and engaging to kids.  The colorful and fun illustration introduce young children to a lot of the tools that are commonly used in the household's maintenance and improvement projects.  This book makes the shopping errands in the local hardware store a lot more fun and interesting to the kids.  This book is both fun and educational. The Next Best Thing - Free Novel Giveaway

Image
Since the beginning of this blog, I had listed this book on this blog to be given away. It's been years now and there hasn't been any taker.  My local library already had several copies of this book so I don't want to give it to the library to take up its valuable real estate.  Today, I donated this book to the free little library on the curbside.  Now my bookshelf has one book less. My Review On This Book: A lot of my friends like this book. They are the ones who recommended this book to me. But this book isn't my cup of tea.  I didn't relate to the heroine Ruth and I have no interest in her love life either.  None of her boyfriends were likable and they failed to impress me. I found the sex scenes in this book stupid and totally not romantic.  The only likable characters in this fiction were Ruth's grandma and her boyfriend whom she eventually married in the story. The backdrop of this fiction was Los Angeles but reading it didn't make me particularly...

The Snow Queen

Image
This is a great book to start the little ones on the Classics.  The illustrations are beautiful and vibrant. This retold story helps little kids learn the value of friendship, and it can help parents to explain to them the various negative emotions and teach them how to handle them.  This is a wonderful book to read to the little ones, and hopefully this story will inspire the kids to write their own great tales later on, like it did to so many other great writers.  Click here to read a page . P.S. I'm now giving a bunch of magazines and books that are like new in condition to make space in my cluttered bookshelf.  Feel free to click here to check them out before you head to the bookstore to spend money to buy any of them .

HTML, CSS & JavaScript Web Publishing in One Hour a Day

Image
This book is so boring and dry. It is a very thick book with over 750++ pages of very boring texts. I flipped through this book in the library hoping to find something to improve this very website of mine. But I found nothing useful. I'm pretty clueless in web design and web programming so I want to learn how I can make this website of mine more functional and beautiful. But there is noithing in this book that can help me to achieve that. May be I didn't read the book long enough. It's very difficult to hold my attenntion on  this book. There are so many texts and paragraphs. Just by reading one chapter will require more than 1 hour so I didn't attempt. There are exercises at the end of this chapter which will require more time. So I don't know how I can do what the title promises. Besides, what's the point of reading this book when there is now an app that I can use to set up a site like this one in minutes, without me knowing any coding or web design. If ...

Organize Yourself!

Image
I have been putting off trashing this book for about a year.  But finally, I tossed this book into thrash a few minutes ago .  After reading pg. 5 of this book, I discover that I'm a procrastinator. I often delay my decision making because I don't want to confront it.  To me, the decision on whether I should trash a book is just too painful to make.  But I took this book's advice and just started the tossing anyway.  My bookshelves are very very cluttered, so cluttered that I no longer know what books I have, so cluttered that I'm too afraid to even look at my bookshelves anymore.  The clutter  makes me feel so overwhelmed that I am unable to make a decision on what book I should read.  So, I end up not reading much of my books.   The reason that I trashed this book isn't because I didn't enjoy reading it. I did and I like this book.  I like that this book divides organizing into different subject areas and aspects of daily lives....

Magrit Mondavi's Vignettes : Stories and Recipes From a Life in Wine

Image
I found this book in my local library. Surprisingly, this book isn't available on Amazon. I wanted to buy this book because I love the adorable and whimsical illustrations throughout the pages of  the book,  like the one on the book cover. But Amazon doesn't have it. I thought Amazon had all the books in the world, I guess not.

The Hormone Balance Cookbook

Image
The recipes in this book have very beautiful plating and photographs. But finding all the ingredients in the typical grocery store to cook them can be a challenge. For example, where can I get oat cream to make the Italian Chicken Pot featured in this book?
