The Cloisters

Image
If only I hadn't stepped inside a bookstore today, I wouldn't have discovered this page turner.  I had read the intriguing Prologue and Chapter One of this book inside the bookstore and I found it hard to put the book down.  When I read about Ann's dead father, her mom who works in the cafeteria in Whitman College and her small town existence in Walla Walla being a part-time waitress in a dinner, I felt sad when she packed up everything in her room at home, leaving her widowed  mother in Walla Walla, for the Big Apple.  There were only two in her family and now they were going to be thousands of miles apart.  I just felt sad when I put myself in Ann's mom's situation.  In Chapter 2, Ann was told that the Metorpolitan Museum in New York City suddenly realized that there was no internship position for Ann. While she was sitting in the office of some important HR director inside the MET, receiving the blow of the rejection, the curator at the Cloisters suddenl...

44 Charles Street: A Novel

Image
I discovered this book when I was recently reading an old magazine of mine .  This book ran a whole page ad in this magazine and it caught my attention. So for all the authors out there, promoting a book on a magazine ads still helps even in this day and age when social media rule. My Thought On Chapter One:   This book began with the problems of a 35-year old Francesca who was dealing with a broken relationship, a leaky house and a failing art gallery. How common do women have problems in our career, our finances, our home and our relationship all at the same time?  I think it's pretty common.    My Thought On Chapter Two :  So Francesca's mother was actually a Countess in Italy because her last dead husband was a count.  She married and divorced multiple times and got rich along the way.  Francesca's father was a famous and accomplished artist who made lots of money by painting. He was married to Avery, who was a wealthy and successful attorn...

Fix It, Stage It, Sell It--QUICK!: A Do-It-Yourselfer's Guide for Rapid-Turnover of Any Home In Any Market

Image
I stumbled upon this book on a book trolley. Actually, do I need this book nowadays when homes are sold quickly with bidding wars?  But I am reading it now because I'm curious about the "quick fixes". My Reading Notes : "Homes on the market for more than a month or so tend to be considered "stale"."  pg. vii.  So does that mean if I want to buy a house at a bargain price, I should look for listings that have been more than one month old?   "Buyers form a first impression of a home as soon as they drive up. If that first impression is good, the house is half sold. If it's bad, then you/your agent will spend the next half hour trying to reverse that bad impression." pg. 3.   My condo complex has very good curb appeal. It's just that the interor of  my unit is cluttered with books, and is not appealing. This is why I'm trying to sell and give away my books and magazines here.

Twilight

Image
One of my  favorite quotes from this book: "When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it's not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end." pg 1. I had just picked up this book from my local library because the movie is now on Netflix, and I want to read the book first before I watch the moive.  I haven't read the book yet and I haven't watched the movie yet either.  I just never had the time to read the book since I heard my friends and siblings talk about it back in 2005.  It sounds like a lifetime ago, but to me, it felt like yesterday. I own a lot of books but I don't know how I never bought this one. So, do you have a copy of this book on your bookshelf?  If not, why not? My thought on Chapter One: After reading the first chapter of this book, I can see the appeal of the story to young adults  back in 2005, back before 'The Vampire's Diaries' became the hit TV series that got me hooked to my TV week after week.   ...

The Girl From Home

Image
Okay, I'm borrowing another book from my local library. The title caught my interest because years ago I had glued myself to the Barnes & Noble Cafe to read " The Girl On the Train " and I couldn't put the book down.  I hope I'll enjoy this book just as much.  If you had read this book already, please leave a comment in the comment box below to let me know how you like it. My thought on Chapter One:  This chapter is just the detailed description of the first sentence of the back-cover blurb.  It introduced the main character - Joanthan Caine, the Wall-Street man and his beautiful trophy wife in greater details, in terms of their backgrounds, age, appearance, style, etc.  Jonathan made millions a year in Wall Street, and yet he was still living from paycheck to paycheck just like many of us. He just had a mortgage in the balance of millions of dollars, and he had monthly expenses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and both the Federal and State goverr...

There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me

Image
"The relationships between mothers and their daughters are often fraught and fascinatingly complicated." pg. 3.  I absultely agree with Brook Shields here. "As a child, I literally couldn't imagine life without her. I used to think that if Mom died, I'd die. too." pg.4   I'm glad that she now has a husband and two beautiful daugthers. This is why people must get married and must have children, either adopted or biological,  particularly for those who are the only child.  I hold nothing against people who don't want to get married or have kids, but when our parents die, what family will we have if we don't have a committed partner to build a family with?  Friends can't replace family because rarely will a friend feel, "If my friend died, I'd die too."  "She saw herself the way she wanted others to see her and built up the necessary barricades between her real characters and what she presented." pg 7.  Wow, this sounds l...

Catering to Nobody

Image
I'm currently reading this book.  So far I find the story enjoyable. The heroine in this book, Goldy, is a very likable and relatable character.  Since Goldy is a caterer, a lot of the storyline unfolds when Goldy is doing the cooking or serving the food.  I love to eat,  reading this book makes me hungry and want to go to the kitchen and start cooking. This book introduced me to a beverage that I never heard of or paid attention to even if it has always been in the store, it's Postum, the coffee substitute .  Now I want to get a jar just out of curiosity.   This book begins with an inspiring menu of a cold buffet . P.S.  I'm currently purging my bookshelves to make space, so I'm now giving away a bunch of books and magazines that are like new condition .  I'm also selling some of them for a buck or two .

Christmas Angels: Gabriel's Angel / First Impressions by Nora Roberts

Image
This is the first book that I checked out from the library in 2021! Happy reading for the New Year, everybody!! Call me shallow but  I like this book more than the other book that I have been trying to finish reading since last year.  Supper Menu inspired by pg. 23 of this book (The meal that Laura made for Gabe on their first meeting): BLT Sandwich Clam Chowder Milk Coffee Laura seemed to also enjoy hot chocolate .  So I often made one when I have time to sit down to continue my reading of this book.

Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty

Image
Sometimes a non-fiction can be more a page turner than fiction.  I find this book very thought-provocaking.  When the book mentions that in order for the Spanish crown, the conquistadors and their descendants to make themselves very rich,  they designed instituions to  force indigenous people's living standard down to a subsistence level, and to extract all income in excess of this for the Spaniards. Such institutions 1) expropriated the land of the indigenous people,  2) forced them to work in exchange for low wages, 3) charged high taxes and 4) charged high prices for goods that weren't even voluntarily bought.  After I read all these four measures, I can't help but compare the existing policy of my elected government to the tactics of these old colonial institutions.  I know that I read this book years too late. But to me, this book is still mind-opening.  Have you read this book?  What do you feel about it?

Mary Kay: The Success Story of America's Most Dynamic Businesswoman

Image
I have a feeling that  this is going to be a good book just by reading the preface, "My retirement was less than a week old, and I already knew why so many obituaries include the phrase "He retired last year.""   It turned out that the author had attempted to  write a book before she wrote this autobiography decades ago.  I love her tone of humor and I'm now intrigued by her success after I googled who Mary Kay was.  I never liked the preface of any book that I had read, but I enjoyed the preface of this book and I found it very inspiring.

Bloomberg: A Billionaire's Ambition

Image
"Before the buildings disintegrated, dozens of people trapped on the upper floors propelled themselves out of shattered windows to escape the intolerable heat of burning fuel.  The desperate images seared themselves into New Yorkers' minds.  Each jumper landed with a sickening  thud, the sound of the bodies creating a drumbeat of death that echoed throughout the city." pg. xiii to pg. xiv Wow, I think this reads like a page turner more than the Stephen King novel that I recently  tried to read but put down...

Happy: Simple Steps to Get the Most Out of Life

"We were living the lives that were expected of us rather than the lives that made us whole." pg.11

Mr. Mercedes: A Novel

Image
This is my first time reading a novel from Stephen King. I just finished the first few pages that described the event that set the beginning of Chapter one in the book, which is summarized in the first paragraph of the book summary on the book jacket .  At this moment, I don't know why this book is loved by so many.

The Best American Short Stories of the Eighties

Image
I inherited this book from my mom-in-law. I doubt she read it herself because the pages look as if they had never been turned . But are the stories inside this book really America's best short stories in the eighties?  If so, why doesn't my local library have a copy of this book?  Just how do libraries decide what books to put in their collection?  I'm curious because my local library seems to have a lot of very useless and boring  books on  the shelves.  Just who gets to decide what books our  local libraries carry? Does anyone know? Anyway, I'm going to keep this book on my bookshelf for now because I think any books that my local library doesn't have are keepers. Stories included in this book: Helping by Robert Stones The Emerald by Donald Barthelme
